An Invitation

Before prospective students commit to taking lessons, we like to invite them to make a no-obligation appointment for a short visit to discuss their interest in dressmaking.  During the visit we can answer any questions they may have and give them the opportunity to view the teaching environment of our workroom.  They can then make an informed decision about whether or not to proceed with lessons.

Lessons Planned with You in Mind

Sewing lessons for our students are personally planned to suit each student's level of experience, personal interests and goals.

 = Popular interests include =

  • Basic Sewing Lessons for Beginners
  • Refreshing or Upskilling of Abilities
  • Professional Finishing Techniques
  • Adapting Patterns to Personal Requirements for DIY Home Sewing
  • Special Projects (e.g., a bridal gown)
  • Dressmaking as a Professional Career

Class Schedules

Classes are held from Monday to Friday between 10:00am and 5:00pm.  Our policy of flexible appointments provides for a good selection of convenient times (click here).*

*Weekend lessons can sometimes be arranged, should weekdays be unsuitable.  Please enquire.

Attendance and Assignments

One-hour lessons are scheduled as often as required, consistent with a student's learning ability.  Most students find that one or two lessons a week is ideal.

Between lessons students practise at home by applying what they have learned in class to related homework assignments.

Certification

We teach at two skill levels:

  • Essential Dressmaking for home sewing
  • Professional Tailoring and Dressmaking for those planning a career or a business

A Certificate of Achievement is awarded in both categories upon satisfactory demonstration of ability and the meeting of technical standards.

Tuition Fees

Our standard fee of $40 per hour includes:

  • Personal one-on-one instruction
  • Individually planned assignments
  • The use of workroom equipment (sewing machines, cottons, dressmaking tools, steam generator, etc.)
  • Student records
  • Technical assessment and certification

10-hour Block Bookings

We offer a 10% discount on prepaid tuition purchased in blocks of 10 one-hour lessons.  This is a $400 value for $360, a savings equivalent to one free lesson.

This type of booking is more economical than a casual arrangement and is the preferred choice of students learning long-term.

Easy Payment Option

To assist anyone for whom it may be helpful, the following Easy Payment Option is available for our 10-hour block bookings:

  • $170 deposit with the first lesson;
  • $30 payment with each of the remaining nine lessons.

Casual Lessons

For experienced sewers who would welcome the opportunity for a few casual sessions to sharpen their skills or review a particular technique, our fee is $40 per hour.

Terms

All fees are payable in advance of lessons by cash or cheque.  Terms and conditions apply.

Convenient Central Location

Our studio is situated in Riccarton, an inner-west suburb of Christchurch.  Directions will be provided when you contact us and parking is not a problem.

Kanako started with us as a beginner in July 2002 and completed basic training while working on her own bridal gown as a special project.

Upon completing her studies in advanced tailoring techniques, Kanako began to establish herself as a Certified Professional Dressmaker.

Kanako's specialty is bridal wear and she now has her own label ("K-O-J") with a steadily growing clientele.
